About this tool

What does it convert?

Plain text into its binary (base-2) representation — each character as 8-bit groups — and back. Useful for teaching how computers see text, debugging protocols, and CTF puzzles.

How to use it

  • Type text to see binary; paste binary to decode.
  • Choose separators (spaces, none) and bit width if offered.
  • Strip formatting before decoding pasted dumps.

Examples

  • Hi → 01001000 01101001.
  • Reading binary clock displays and puzzles.
  • Verifying ASCII wire format in a protocol dump.

Important limitations

  • Assumes ASCII/UTF-8: emoji and accented characters are multi-byte sequences, not one group each.
  • Binary is verbose (8×) — a teaching view, not a storage format.
  • Whitespace and line breaks in pasted dumps must be cleaned first.

Frequently asked questions

Why 8 digits per letter?

One byte per ASCII character; 8 bits cover 0–255.

What about emoji?

UTF-8 encodes them as 2–4 bytes — expect multiple groups per glyph.

Binary to text fails — why?

Length must be a multiple of 8 with only 0/1 characters after cleanup.
