About this tool
What does it look up?
The first 24 bits (OUI) of a MAC address against the IEEE registry to identify the hardware vendor — for inventory, forensics and “whose device is this?” triage.
How to use it
- Paste a MAC in any common notation.
- Read the registered vendor and address block.
- Cross-check with DHCP/hostname data.
Examples
- Identifying an unknown device on the office LAN.
- Verifying access-point hardware during audits.
- Enriching asset inventories automatically.
Important limitations
- OUIs get reassigned and resold — data goes stale; fairly recent snapshots only.
- Virtual/bridged NICs show hypervisor OUIs, not the guest.
- Spoofed MACs lie fluently — treat vendor as a hint, not proof.
Privacy
Lookup runs against a local table. Real device addresses can track people — handle accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
Unknown OUI?
Too new, private assignment, or locally-administered (virtual) address.
24 vs 36-bit blocks?
MA-L (24), MA-M (28), MA-S (36) — smaller blocks, more specific assignees.
Can vendors hide?
Yes — randomization and spoofing exist precisely for that.
