About this tool
What is a numeronym?
A word abbreviated as first letter + omitted count + last letter: i18n (internationalization), a11y (accessibility), k8s (Kubernetes). Compact jargon for docs, variables and community slang.
How to use it
- Enter a long word to get its numeronym.
- Check collisions against known ones (k8s is taken).
- Use for internal shorthand, rarely for user-facing names.
Examples
- internationalization → i18n, localization → l10n.
- Naming a hamburgers-menu component “h9u”? Better not — check first.
- Community shorthand in chat and tickets.
Important limitations
- Ambiguity explodes: c8s could be many words — context required.
- Outsiders won’t decode them; prefer plain words in user interfaces.
- Some “standards” (k8s) are trademarks — respect that.

Frequently asked questions
How is the count derived?
Letters between first and last, counted exactly.
Why k8s for Kubernetes?
K + 8 letters + s — coined for brevity in container circles.
Should products use them?
As codenames, maybe. As product names, almost never.
